Establishing standardized Project Management in global companies. What is the trend in qualification and certification?
With the increasing significance of global project business, the importance of standardization and harmonization of Project Management processes and, for many companies, that of certification is playing an ever greater part. More and more companies are facing the question as to what global Project Management standard best suits their requirements.
Different cultures, different levels of knowledge and different expectations - namely, the challenges which the global project teams have to overcome - are multi-faceted. If different Project Management concepts and standards are then added to this, cross-border cooperation becomes difficult. At the same time, the degree of standardization and harmonization in globally active companies is increasingly becoming a success factor. Protracted coordination processes and misunderstandings owing to different concepts simply cost companies time and money. The latter are limited, particularly in international project business, which has to be implemented quickly. Against this background, numerous international companies are involved in developing and implementing a standardized Project Management concept and in the uniform training of project team members, including the final certification.
The decision as to which Project Management standard should be used globally does not always come easily to companies. This applies above all to companies in Germany and Scandinavia. The background is the different focus of the standards. Take IPMA as an example: here its strengths lie in the career-oriented and highly comprehensive Project Management qualification approach. PMI on the other hand, scores with its standard worldwide checking system and an extremely methodical approach. Therefore in many companies, several standards even exist side by side with respect to qualification and certification. The difference between these standards in terms of processes and concepts, however, makes project cooperation cumbersome and increases the need for coordination.
What is the trend in international companies? As also described in the trend paper on Project Management 2015 ("Global governance - local performance") published in 2011 by Tiba and Lünendonk, the PM standard, which offers globally uniform certification formats and for certification of persons and companies makes use of models and content which are adapted to one another, will win through. ISO 21500, "A Guide for Project Management", which is intended to be published by approximately 2012, looks promising. This international Project Management standard is supported by all the relevant associations and forms a framework, from which companies throughout the world can derive their own methods. The Project Management standard therefore provides an opportunity to standardize PM at a high level of abstraction. Industry-specific PM standards and best practices will also become established.
From consulting to implementation of the contents of the Project Management standards
The Unit Tiba Zert is geared to accompanying companies in selecting the right Project Management standard up to the point where the standards learned are transferred into everyday PM. Companies are given an overview of the differences in the various PM standards (see WEBINARS) and using Tiba Zert Assessment they work out, together with the Tiba consultants, an objective result as to which PM standard is suitable for their company. All in-house preparation courses are characterized by the integration of company-specific requirements and correctly dimensioned content, which is coordinated with the rest of the PM training courses. After certification, the trainers are available as required, for individual project support. In this way, companies take an important qualification step towards setting up a PM standard.
